Katie Taylor just became the first woman ever to win consecutive Female Fighter of the Year awards by the Boxing Writers’ Association of America. Taylor edged out Jessica McCaskill to the award, with both women having strong years in the sport. The last woman to win this award before Taylor was Claressa Shields in 2018.
“It’s such an honor to be chosen twice,” she said. “To win this award again is amazing. I’m hoping to be fighting in February or March of next year, and we’re not too sure who or where it will be, but I’m excited to be fighting again.”
Taylor added, “Going into 2020, I was hoping this would be a good year for me. I was happy to finish off the year fighting my mandatory and I’m delighted to finish my year off strong. I always go into every year trying to make huge strides in the sport.”

Katie Taylor: Deserving of the honor?
It is hard to argue against Katie Taylor’s accomplishments in 2020. While Jessica McCaskill ended Cecilia Braekhus undefeated streak, one could argue that Taylor achieved more. However, other fighters like Terri Harper also could have a case for the award.
Despite all of that, Taylor is the deserving winner. She defended all of her titles against the undefeated Miriam Gutierrez. She also had a dominant win over Delfine Persoon which further established her as the best female fighter this year. Taylor is also the number one pound-for-pound women’s boxer in the world.
While some may argue that Claressa Shields still has a claim to that title, Taylor has been way more active this year. She has established herself as the woman to beat for any fighter that is looking to make their way up the ranks. Bith her wins in 2020 were against highly-touted opponents and she took both of them down with relative ease.
A deserving award for a humble champion.
